Who sets the rules

Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA)

The rule

KSHSAA Handbook Rule 21 (Amateur) itself contains no NIL language; it bars using athletic skill for gain, competing for cash, pay for participation, and cash or merchandise awards. The Executive Board's Nov. 17, 2021 staff interpretation permits a student to be compensated as an influencer or representative or to provide endorsements, subject to conditions.

If a rule is broken

Rule 21: ineligible in that sport for the entire time the student is in middle/junior or senior high school unless reinstated by the Executive Board.

Middle school, club and travel ball

Rule 21 Section 1 expressly applies to grades 7-12, so KSHSAA amateur rules (and by extension the NIL interpretation) reach middle/junior high members. Does not govern non-school club play, though Rule 22 restricts outside competition in-season.

NCAA Division I, everywhere

Every deal worth $600 or more (added up per payer) entered since July 1, 2025 or the start of junior year, whichever is later, must be reported through NIL Go within 14 days of starting classes or before the first game.

Recruits enrolling on or after August 1, 2026 may hire agents under the April 15, 2026 Division I rule. The NJCAA still ends eligibility for a written agent agreement.

Quick answers

Can high school athletes in Kansas make NIL money?

Yes. High school athletes in Kansas can take NIL deals, with conditions.

Do Kansas athletes have to tell the school about an NIL deal?

None statewide. None identified.

Does a travel ball or club deal count in Kansas?

State association rules follow the athlete, not where the deal came from. A deal through a travel team is fine as long as nothing ties back to the school team. Rule 21 Section 1 expressly applies to grades 7-12, so KSHSAA amateur rules (and by extension the NIL interpretation) reach middle/junior high members. Does not govern non-school club play, though Rule 22 restricts outside competition in-season.

Can a Kansas high school athlete use an agent for NIL?

Not addressed.
