High school

Who sets the rules

Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA, boys) and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU, girls)

The rule

IHSAA NIL guidance (posted on the IHSAA handbook page) lets a student earn NIL compensation if it is not contingent on athletic performance, not an inducement to attend or remain at a school, and not provided by the school or its agents (boosters, foundations). IGHSAU follows parallel guidance for girls' sports.

Tell the school

None statewide

None stated; students and families are told to seek guidance from their member school.

Off limits

No IHSAA or member-school marks, logos, names or mascots; no school-logo apparel or equipment; no school facilities; no promotion of gaming/gambling, alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, banned or illegal substances, adult entertainment, or weapons/firearms; families should get their own legal and tax advice and check NCAA/NJCAA/NAIA rules.

Agents

Not addressed

If a rule is broken

Not specified in the guidance; violations would fall under the amateur-status/eligibility provisions of the association handbook (loss of eligibility).

Middle school, club and travel ball

Both associations govern member school teams (IHSAA/IGHSAU also sanction junior high play under member schools, but the NIL guidance speaks only to 'student'); no reach into non-school club play. NCSA notes rules 'may differ by governing association.'

NCAA Division I, everywhere

Every deal worth $600 or more (added up per payer) entered since July 1, 2025 or the start of junior year, whichever is later, must be reported through NIL Go within 14 days of starting classes or before the first game.

Recruits enrolling on or after August 1, 2026 may hire agents under the April 15, 2026 Division I rule. The NJCAA still ends eligibility for a written agent agreement.

Quick answers

Can high school athletes in Iowa make NIL money?

Yes. High school athletes in Iowa can take NIL deals, with conditions.

Do Iowa athletes have to tell the school about an NIL deal?

None statewide. None stated; students and families are told to seek guidance from their member school.

Does a travel ball or club deal count in Iowa?

State association rules follow the athlete, not where the deal came from. A deal through a travel team is fine as long as nothing ties back to the school team. Both associations govern member school teams (IHSAA/IGHSAU also sanction junior high play under member schools, but the NIL guidance speaks only to 'student'); no reach into non-school club play. NCSA notes rules 'may differ by governing association.'

Can a Iowa high school athlete use an agent for NIL?

Not addressed.
