Who sets the rules

Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL)

The rule

RIIL Rules and Regulations, Amateurism (Section 19): a student forfeits amateur status by capitalizing on athletic fame in affiliation with the school team, school or RIIL, but the rule expressly does not restrict a student's right to participate in a commercial endorsement provided there is no school-team, school or RIIL affiliation.

None statewide

None; no NIL reporting rule.

Off limits

Student may not appear in the school uniform and may not use the marks/logos of the school or the RIIL in any endorsement; no money/gifts tied to school/team/RIIL activities. No product-category list, agent, parent, collective or recruiting-inducement language specific to NIL (general RIIL recruiting rules apply).

If a rule is broken

Loss of amateur status in that sport; student may apply to the League for reinstatement after one year. Competing under an assumed name: one year ineligibility.

Middle school, club and travel ball

NCAA Division I, everywhere

Every deal worth $600 or more (added up per payer) entered since July 1, 2025 or the start of junior year, whichever is later, must be reported through NIL Go within 14 days of starting classes or before the first game.

Recruits enrolling on or after August 1, 2026 may hire agents under the April 15, 2026 Division I rule. The NJCAA still ends eligibility for a written agent agreement.

Quick answers

Can high school athletes in Rhode Island make NIL money?

Yes. High school athletes in Rhode Island can take NIL deals, with conditions.

Do Rhode Island athletes have to tell the school about an NIL deal?

None statewide. None; no NIL reporting rule.

Does a travel ball or club deal count in Rhode Island?

State association rules follow the athlete, not where the deal came from. A deal through a travel team is fine as long as nothing ties back to the school team. RIIL governs member high schools only; nothing reaches club play or middle school.

Can a Rhode Island high school athlete use an agent for NIL?

Not addressed.
